What to Expect

At Royal Veterinary Hospital, we believe in clear and honest communication. Before your pet’s surgery, we will review the treatment plan with you, outlining the procedures and associated costs. If additional treatments are recommended during the procedure, we will always discuss them with you and provide cost details before proceeding.

Your pet’s safety is our top priority. We follow strict protocols to ensure a smooth and safe anesthetic experience, taking every measure to provide the highest standard of care. These include:

Preanesthetic bloodwork: Preanesthetic bloodwork evaluates your pet’s major organ function to ensure they can safely metabolize anesthetic medications. This important step helps our veterinarian create the safest and most effective anesthetic protocol tailored to your pet’s needs.

ECG Monitoring: We also offer ECG monitoring to assess your pet’s heart function.

Intravenous fluids: Every surgical patient has an intravenous catheter placed and receives essential fluids. This allows us to inject medication directly into the bloodstream throughout the procedure and helps regulate your pet’s body temperature, blood pressure, and hydration, as well as help flush the anesthetic medication through your pet’s system

Pain Management: Your pet will receive pain medication prior to the surgery to give your pet a ‘head start’ on pain management. We monitor your pet for any signs of pain throughout all stages of surgery and will administer pain medication if needed.

Monitoring: Along with modern surgical equipment, our veterinarian and staff are trained to monitor your pet during the procedure. There is a trained professional dedicated to your pet’s care at all times before, during, and after the procedure.

Comfortable /Pain Free Recovery : Your pet’s comfort is our priority! Pain medication will be sent home to keep him comfortable and pain-free during his recovery. Your pet may have to wear a cone in order to prevent him from licking or scratching the incision area, which could lead to re-opening of the incision and/or infection.
